Males' Greeting

A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

JMS is proud to share that our students, families, and staff have contributed $506.42 for Hurricane Dorian relief. Congratulations to JMS Grade 5 for topping all JMS classes with an average contribution of $6.09 per student for the Red Cross's Hurricane Dorian relief efforts, narrowly edging second-grade's $5.73 per student average. We thank all of you who participated in this generous and important effort!

JMS greatly appreciates the time taken by so many of our community's male role models to visit and welcome our wonderful JMS students this past Monday morning. Your impact cannot be underestimated.

I would like to invite you to join me the morning of Friday, October 4th to share with you and gather your feedback on our 2019-2020 JMS School Improvement Plan. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. Please RSVP at your convenience.

      Date: Friday, 10/4
      Time: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
      Location: JMS Art Room

In an effort to make our JMS community garden a more integrated  aspect of our school community, we are transitioning from a single-event focus (Harvest Luncheon) to a series of frequent experiences for students interact to with the garden. Our students have already experienced or soon will be experiencing the garden in the following ways:

- Creation of artwork based on the colors and materials found in the garden
- Research on the history, nutrition, and mythology of vegetables, herbs, and fruits growing within the garden
- Preparation, sampling, and sharing of baked goods by students in our Life Skills program
- "Stone Soup" inspired meal preparation to be shared with our friends at the Morris Senior Center
- “Take A Taste” days within wellness classes, offering students the chance to sample a variety of fresh-picked organic fruits and veggies from the garden
- Data collection on students' favorite garden items
- Preparation, sampling, and sharing of homemade healthy potato chips
- Preparation, sampling, and sharing of a "Candy Counter" featuring a variety of dehydrated fruits and vegetables
- Lessons on "farmacology" illustrating the connections between fruits, vegetables, and the human body
- Preparation, sampling, and sharing of herb bread, to be shared with community members who have helped with the garden renovation
- Preparation, sampling, and sharing of "micro-greens" over the winter months
- Creation and donation of garden-inspired student artwork stationary/cards for community members
An album of photos from all three schools can be found here.

Finally, I am happy to announce that JMS has hired a student resource officer, Mr. Kevin McGrady, who will be joining us next week as a full-time presence on the school grounds and member of the JMS team. If you have a moment when you visit JMS, please join me in welcoming Mr. McGrady to our school community.

Please reach out to me at any time with any question, concerns, or ideas.

Have a wonderful weekend,
KC Chapman, Principal
