A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,

I hope that you all had a wonderful week.

As you may have seen this week in the news, James Morris School earned a score of 88.8 out of 100.0 possible points on the just-released Connecticut's Next Generation Accountability "Report Card". This score ranked JMS 49th out of 966 Connecticut schools (95th percentile). For comparison purposes, here are our last five years' scores:

   - 2018-2019: 88.8
   - 2017-2018: 76.9
   - 2016-2017: 75.0
   - 2015-2016: 72.7
   - 2014-2015: 79.9

Scores for elementary schools are derived from a combination of indicators, including

   - Student Attendance
   - Language Arts growth
   - Language Arts performance
   - Math growth
   - Math performance
   - Physical Fitness Test performance

Our work for constant improvement continues this year and beyond. Congratulations to the entire JMS learning community!

Each spring, we ask our students' families to participate in a survey that is designed to gather your feedback on a number of topics, including your and your child(ren)'s perceptions of the school's academic instruction, safety and security, communication, and opportunities for parent/guardian involvement, among other things. Past feedback has indicated that some parents have felt that their opportunities to contribute are limited, due to such things as work schedule, other commitments, or uncertainty as to how best to contribute.

Traditionally, parents tend to view (a) volunteering in the school and (b) serving on the PTO as the clearest examples of "being involved" with the school. While these are both valued and generous contributions, they are just two of many ways parents contribute: attending a school event, parent-teacher conference, or "coffee with the principal"; contributing to a fundraiser; helping with a PTO event; emailing your the teacher or principal; chaperoning a field trip; responding to a questionnaire or survey; sending in a snack or box of tissues for the class... Each of these examples are among the countless ways in which all of you have likely contributed at one point or another. When it comes time to reflect upon your involvement with the school, give yourself credit! Your generosity and support helps us all do our important work for your children.

Please reach out with questions or comments at any time.

Thank you and have a great weekend,
KC Chapman, Principal
