School StoreA Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

Over the next few weeks, I will be reaching out to you to share and reflect upon how well things are going in specific areas that you identified last year [through the RSD6 family Survey] as areas of concern.

In November 2017, 49% of families responded favorably to the survey question, "How often does your child read for fun?"

Both last year and this year, independent reading has been prioritized and celebrated more so than in past years at JMS, through such things as

- our ongoing reading raffle,
- pajama/movie days to celebrate whole-school reading accomplishments,
- reinstallation of reading logs in some grades,
- last year's three-school book drive,
- the addition of popular new titles to our classroom libraries,
- expansion of our group of senior volunteer readers from the America Reads program,
- and a renewed and active connection with our Morris Public Library.

If you are finding that your child is not reading for fun at home this year, please reach out to me (via email, phone, or a drop-in visit) to share why you think that might be the case . It is my goal and that of all of our teachers to foster a love of reading in every student.

Thank you for your time and feedback!
KC Chapman, Principal
